One of the best ways to benefit your service or business is to benefit the community in which it resides. This may seem like an obvious statement, however many people over look this simple fact when looking for ways to improve their sales, customer opinion or are just trying to get the word out.

Yet, if there was a way to give people both a positive image of your business or service and increase its attention, doing something that benefits the community should be at the top of every business owners list. No matter how well off your community may be, there is always room for someone to step in and make a difference. There are endless opportunities for this kind of community service, and not only does it benefit you professionally, but it also benefits you morally as well.

Learning Community Needs
The first step to any promotional campaign that intends to benefit the community is to learn what kinds of things the community needs. Does it need a new day care, or perhaps it could benefit from a reading program for children. Maybe there is a child adult with a life threatening illness that could use money to pay for treatment. No matter where you are located, there is a group of people in need. The great thing about this is that as a business owner you are in a great position to not only bring attention to this need to help address this need as well. Not only will this benefit the community or individual it will go a very long way towards establishing a positive image for your business.

Working with Other Businesses
Certainly, some problems are bigger than others. If, for example, you have decided to help find a way to increase the amount of affordable day care in your community, you will quickly find out that doing so is going to require a lot of resources and that, while you may be willing to do a lot of the work, you can’t do it all. At this time, it is a great idea to reach out to other businesses. What better way to reach out to another business than with a promotional item. This serves the purpose of increasing the awareness of the community need at the same time as establishing a relationship with another business. Once you have repeated this process several times you will be amazed at just how much support you have gathered, and when people learn you have spearheaded the effort, you are sure to gain at least a few extra customers.

If, for some reason, you are not in the position to attempt something as major as the above example, there is still a lot that can be done on smaller scale. Every community has at least one family that is dealing with a diseased love one, and this means they might need help to pay for treatment. A great way to get involved is to sell a small but useful promotional item while giving all of the proceeds to the family in need. This goes a long way towards both helping the family and gaining positive publicity for your company.

It would seem that the idea of benefiting your community to benefit yourself is something everyone does, and in some cases it is. However, there can never be enough caring no matter how well things are going. By being willing to take a step and try to make a difference in your community you bring both a better community to live in, and a better business to run.

The key thing to remember when you are considering embarking on this kind of promotional campaign is to make sure you are addressing a real need. If for some reason you don’t, there could be some negative backlash, which is the opposite of your intended goals. One way to make sure you are addressing a true need of a community or individual is to speak with other people and find out what they have to say. This not only gives you a better picture of what needs there are, it allows you to make new friendships and potentially gain new customers long before you give away your first promotional product.
